Church

Founded on February 5, 1892 and constituted in 1900, St. Paul A.M.E. is the oldest church in the City of Boynton Beach. The first settled pastor was Rev. James P. Epperson from 1900-1902.

The original church building was located on the NE corner of Boynton Beach Blvd. and US 1; however, in 1925 the building had to be relocated because of recently introduced segregation laws. The structure was moved on a wagon to a site on Wells Avenue directly across the street from the current site. The church remained there for three years until it was destroyed by a storm in 1928. A new white, rectangular wood frame building with a bell was erected in 1929 and dedicated in 1930. The pastor in 1938 was Rev. Alexander L. O’Neal.

In 1954, the new church was built at its current location of 315 E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. This site is directly across the street from the 1929 building site. The church has some Gothic Revival detailing such as pointed arch windows and corner towers with pyramid roofs. Other decorative details include stained glass windows, faux stone veneer around the entrance door, and louvered vents in the corner towers. Internally the church has wooden pews and carved wood details in the pulpit area.
